India | At the PWD Bungalow
Another alternative accomodation in India is the PWD- or dakbungalow. Built by the British for the travelling officials of the Public Works Department, nothing changed since they left. Officially this type of accomodations is not meant for the individual traveller. We even had to write a reservation-letter on the spot to the Chief Inspector of the PWD to get a room. We were given pen and paper and were told to start with “Respective Sir..”. Finding this type of accomodation can be a real problem. There are no signs so you have to rely on the locals. Our experience is that the police-station is a good source of information. Ask for the ‘officer in charge’ and they might even escort you to the nearest accomodation.
