Tech stuff about the Cycling Around The World Website

This page gives information about some design and (web)technical aspects of the Cycling Around the World website. In February 2003 the site moved to it’s own domain at www.cyclingaroundtheworld.nlThere is more general information about this site

How it was done

Several tools were used to build it but nowadays Cycling Around The World is maintained with Macromedia Dreamweaver. Adobe Photoshop is used to create the images. The slide show in our First Impressions theatre was created with Macromedia Flash. We use ASP for serverside scripting and MS Access as a database on some pages.

The aim of Cycling Around The World is to comply with web standards such as (X)HTML, CSS, ECMA-script. The site is designed to qualify for a Bobby Double-A approval; but not all pages will qualify.

Separate style from content

The current design uses the CSS technique to separate style (lay-out) and content. This technique not only makes it much easier to redesign websites. It also makes a site accessible to visitors who use other devices to surf the WWW, such as screen readers or PDA’s.

An excellent and highly recommended demonstration of what can be accomplished visually through CSS-based design is the CSS Zen Garden project. Other good sites are A List Apart and Mezzoblue.
